Meet François Boucher, a French painter and designer, one of the creates masters of the Rococo style. Born in Paris, Boucher was the son of a versatile, not particularly successful, artist and craftsman. As a result, he learned a wide variety of artistic techniques in his fathers workshop before training more formally under François Lemoyne. In 1735 he was granted his first royal commission and this secured his position as a court artist. This role governed the nature of Bouchers art. There were no grand, intellectual themes or moral dramas in his pictures. Instead, he painted light-hearted mythologies and pastoral idylls, which could serve equally well as paintings, tapestry designs or porcelain decoration.
